it's may day!

I hope that the start of May brings the end of snow to all of you who are still seeing it. Ugh.

When I lived in Virginia, this never came up, but apparently it is all the rage in Annapolis: May Day!

This is a historic festival and Maryland's beautiful capital goes all out each year when individuals and businesses join the local garden club in making their own one-of-a-kind flower baskets to celebrate spring and adorn the city.

It is a bit over the top for me as it even has official rules (very HOA-ish):

The rules are:
1.       Baskets must be hung in place by 10 a.m. on May 1 for judging
2.       Businesses may use containers related to their business or a traditional basket
3.       Only fresh cut flowers and live materials may be used…no artificial elements.
4.       Ribbons are a traditional part of a May Day Basket

None the less, it is a pretty spring sight!

As mentioned many times, I have quite the black thumb. I would love to learn to flower arrange and may have to take a class because it seems so fun. In the meantime, in honor of May Day, enjoy a taste of some May Day baskets from years past:

  4. Such a pretty idea and I can't believe some of you guys still have snow going on over there. I was just wondering how the judges would know who had entered if all you do is leave it at your door.
